Getting MyDorm Ready

Below is a list of helpful suggestions to enhance your dorm experience.

Clothes Don’t pack everything you own, just take the items you will need between visits home; trade out item throughout the year. Bring a minimal amount of shoes, socks, underwear, pajamas and several jackets in various weights.

Cleaning Supplies Carpet spray, disinfectant wipes, air freshener (no candles), a portable vacuum, paper towels, dish washing liquid, and dish washing cloth, dust cloth, and glass cleaner. If you have your own bathroom you will need tile cleaner, toilet cleaner and brush, and a sponge. Only one set needed per room, so coordinate sharing the costs with your roommate if you have one.

Drug Store Items Toothpaste, toothbrush, thermometer, soap, shampoo, conditioner, cough syrup, cold medicine, pain reliever, cough drops, upset stomach medicine, any prescription medicine that you have, band aids, small first aid kit, facial care, tissues batteries, power strips, washing detergent and dryer sheets, full length Mirror, duct tape, small tool kit. and extension cords, and a shower tote. Only one set needed per room may be needed, so coordinate sharing the costs with your roommate if you have one.

Bedding and Towels Extra long twin sheets, mattress pad, blankets, quilt, bath towels, wash cloths and a beach towel.

Food Bring nonperishable items, in bulk, that you eat regularly.

Dishes Microwaveable plates, bowls, plastic storage containers, cups, forks, knives, spoons, can opener, bottle opener and a large measuring cup. Only one set needed per room, so coordinate sharing the costs with your roommate if have one.

Laptop There will be Wireless access everywhere so bring a basic laptop with at least 512 megabytes of RAM and multiple USB slots.

Keychain Drive Take files with you and print for free. 256 megabytes should be enough for the average student.

Small Refrigerator Great for leftovers and money savings. Only one needed per room, so coordinate sharing the cost with your roommate if you have one.

Microwave Oven Save money and re-heat all your leftovers. Only one needed per room, so coordinate sharing the cost with your roommate if you have one.

Large Computer Monitor Plug in your lap top and watch TV or DVD’s. Only one TV set or large monitor needed per room, so coordinate sharing the cost with your roommate if you have one.

Wireless Headphones Great for in the room or to take with you; enjoy your entertainment without disturbing others.

Dorm Room Extras Waterproof flip flops, lock box for personal items, alarm clock, posters, cork board and pictures, DVD’s, CDs, books, a fan, a laundry bag, collapsible shelves, storage boxes and bed lifts (extra large bricks or cinder blocks work well).
