Awards in the form of Scholarships are generally given for a specific achievement, knowledge or interest, and/or need and do not have to be paid back. Networking and research are the key; start with your counselor, places of worship, family & friends, request publications for colleges you may attend, from the state you live in and/or where you plan to go to college. Submitting applications on time and follow up is important. If you receive a scholarship from an outside source, provide this information to the Office of Financial Aid at the college(s) where you applied.

Before accepting a scholarship, it is a good idea to learn the terms. Here are a few questions you may want to ask:
Is the scholarship renewable?
Will the scholarship requirements be reviewed, if so, when and how do I renew?
What expenses will the scholarship cover?
What if I change majors, take time off, or study abroad?
Will it transfer to another school?
How is the scholarship lost and can it be regained?
Where and to whom should I direct my Thank You notes?

All scholarship searches and applications should be free; here are just a few of the free online search tools available:

Institutional Scholarships

To obtain a list of scholarships visit the schools web site and/or contact the Office of Financial Aid for a list. You may also want to contact the department that is offering the scholarship to express your interest in being considered. Each school may have a Scholarship Application Process, so do not miss the institutional dates and deadlines; some may occur very early in the admissions process.
